A pair of sculptural, brutalist style high back chairs with dramatic architectural proportions. Handmade in elm with a solid carved plank construction, slab cut seats. The elm has a wonderful grain and has been stained and varnished. Built with an angular, tripod-style base featuring faceted, tapered slab legs braced by an under-seat bracket and an exaggerated obelisk form backrest. 20th century, sourced in Scotland. Please see photos and condition description. This will be sent by courier and a separate invoice will follow purchase to cover this. Please contact me below for a delivery quote.
Size: 158cms tall, 44cms at deepest, 39cms wide at seat, 48cms tall at seat approximately. Very heavy, each chair weighs approximately 10.8kg.
Condition: some general surface wear, scratches, scuffs, chips, some dings; there are some light patches with loss of varnish/stain and colour variation; some visible wear to edges and extremities; some natural splits in the wood grain (noticeably on the slab cut seats); some evidence of historic woodworm (which appears to have been present in the wood before fabrication, as it has since been stained, but small impressions remain; one of the tops of the seat back is worn, scuffed and dented; some handmade shape variation, imperfections and irregularities; the front legs are attached with mortar joints whereas the seat is attached with visible screws at the back; the structure of the chairs means there is little wobble and the undersides would benefit from felt pads. Otherwise these are in good robust vintage condition.
